Platform Capability Assessment

A focused assessment and findings report for organisations that want to understand current cloud/platform engineering maturity and make better cloud and platform decisions.

Understand your cloud/platform engineering maturity. Make better cloud and platform decisions.

A focused assessment and findings report for organisations that want to understand current cloud/platform engineering maturity, identify the gaps and dependencies that matter, and make a proportionate decision about what to do next.

The Platform Capability Assessment is one focused Assess and advise route offered by Cloud Scale Consulting Ltd. It can be useful where an assessment is the right next step, but it is not an assumed prerequisite for engineering support, interim capability or other advisory work.

Is this the right conversation for you?

This assessment is designed for organisations reaching the point where engineering teams have different delivery approaches, architectures and maintenance patterns, and leadership needs a clear view of what to improve, what to standardise and where not to over-engineer.

It is particularly useful where you are seeing some combination of:

  • infrastructure, environments or delivery paths rebuilt for each new project;
  • inconsistent approaches to infrastructure as code, deployment, observability, access or security guardrails;
  • delivery slowed by specialist bottlenecks, hand-offs or unclear ownership;
  • growing maintenance overhead across cloud accounts, environments, platforms or teams;
  • uncertainty about whether platform investment will create value or simply add another layer of complexity; or
  • pressure to enable future technology without clear platform, data, access and governance foundations.

These signals do not necessarily have one cause. The assessment considers them alongside your current capability, constraints, priorities and delivery context.

Who it is for

This is usually a useful conversation for people who are accountable for, or need to shape, cloud and platform outcomes across more than one team or service. That can include:

  • CTOs, CIOs and comparable technology executives considering capability, risk or investment priorities;
  • Heads of Engineering, Platform leaders and technical leads who need evidence and practical options for a wider organisational decision;
  • operational or service leaders responsible for reliability, maintenance overhead, resilience, cost, risk or engineering effectiveness; and
  • senior stakeholders who need a shared, proportionate picture before committing teams to a significant change.

It may not be the right route where the immediate need is hands-on engineering capacity, interim technical leadership or a well-defined improvement initiative that can sensibly begin without an assessment.

What we assess

Together, we build a practical picture of current cloud/platform engineering maturity across:

Capability areaQuestions we explore
Foundations and environmentsHow are accounts, environments, infrastructure and shared services established and maintained?
Delivery paths and automationHow consistently can teams move change from development to production? Where are repeatable paths, manual gates or bottlenecks?
Security and guardrailsWhich controls are built into normal engineering practice, and where does risk or rework emerge?
Reliability and operational ownershipHow are monitoring, support, resilience, service ownership and operational learning handled?
Reuse and platform capabilityWhat is shared effectively, what is duplicated, and where would a platform investment be useful or unnecessary?
People, operating model and adoptionDo teams have clear ownership, skills, contribution paths and ways to adopt common practices?
Readiness for future technologyWhere future capability matters, are the platform, data, access and governance foundations ready?

How it works

  1. Introductory fit discussion

    We establish the challenge or decision to be explored, relevant stakeholders and whether the assessment is likely to help.

  2. Focused assessment activity

    Facilitated stakeholder work is supported by relevant architecture/process material, delivery-friction examples and selected metrics where available. Choose the proportionate shape:

    • Compact assessment: typically around one week of active assessment work, usually completed over about four weeks to allow for client preparation, workshop/interview activity, consolidation, follow-up questions and findings playback.
    • Expanded assessment: typically around two weeks of active assessment work, usually completed over about six weeks where more teams, constraints or evidence need a deeper view.
  3. Findings and decision options

    You receive a written report setting out the maturity picture, key gaps and dependencies, prioritised opportunities, and the most sensible next step.

What you receive

  • A shared view of current cloud/platform engineering maturity.
  • The capability gaps, dependencies and delivery consequences that matter most.
  • Three to five prioritised improvement opportunities.
  • Clear risks, assumptions and evidence gaps.
  • A practical next-step recommendation: internal prerequisites, deeper review, a roadmap, a small prototype, practical engineering support, interim capability, or a decision to defer.

Designed to be useful, not over-sold

This is not a generic cloud audit, a detailed architecture design, an implementation commitment or a promise of guaranteed savings or delivery acceleration.

The assessment is document, interview and workshop-led by default. Read-only technical evidence review can be added as a separately scoped enhancement where it will make the findings more specific.

Relevant experience

  • Reusable foundations: Created and evolved a company-owned AWS/Kubernetes platform foundation, demonstrated across two client projects and reducing development-environment provisioning from two two-week sprints to under one week once hosting access was available.
  • Sustainable engineering capability: Tripled the size of the Consultant Cloud Engineering team over approximately 18 months while managing minimal staff turnover.
  • Platform risk and operational clarity: Defined and implemented an AWS platform redesign that improved environment separation, standardised shared engineering services, and strengthened monitoring, observability and operational visibility.

Bring clarity to the challenge. Build the capability to move forward.

Start with a short conversation about your context, the challenge in front of you and the support that could be most useful next.
